What is Sculptra® and Bellafill®?
The best way to describe the difference between filler and Sculptra or Bellafill is when you have one of these products injected; it is like buying the house versus filler, which is like renting because in one year, you need to have filler injected again and your skin has not improved or changed. Sculptra and Bellafill help repair the skin’s foundation, and you continue to get benefits from these products for 2-5 years.
Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid filler that is FDA-approved for replacing lost collagen and helping restore volume. Collagen loss is a natural side effect of aging and will happen to us. It often gives our faces a bony and hollow appearance and leads the skin to look “saggy.” Sculptra creates natural-looking results that continue to improve over time by stimulating collagen production.
Bellafill is a collagen gel made from PMMA that creates a foundation for developing collagen. The results are immediate when the gel is injected (smile lines improve, and you will see volume restored in the mid-face, jawline, temples, and chin). Over the next few months, the results will continue to improve, and the new collagen will continue to give you natural-looking results that can last up to 5 years.
Sculptra® Is Different From Other Fillers
As a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, Sculptra® is different from traditional dermal fillers, usually composed of hyaluronic acid. Rather than plumping with liquid volume, Sculptra® works with your body to stimulate collagen production and help restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin. Rebuilt collagen then gradually improves facial volume and diminishes wrinkles and folds. This slow-grow product takes time to see results, but the results are worth the wait.

Bellafill is particularly helpful for areas around the mouth, under the eyes, and between the eyebrows. There is one place in which these long-term fillers cannot be used: the lips.
The Sculptra® particles will very gradually disappear, but the collagen produced could last for five or more years. Once the desired correction is achieved, most clients have a maintenance session (one vial) about every year to replace the collagen that may have been lost due to aging in that period.
Remember that we lose collagen as part of the natural aging process; there’s no way to stop that!
Because Bellafill® is specially formulated and injected, it lasts longer than other fillers. Bellafill® patients can typically enjoy their results for five years or longer.
A typical Sculptra® injection protocol would be as follows: two vials used during the first session, followed by one to two vials in your second treatment session, which is four to six weeks after your initial visit. A third session with the application of one last vial may be needed for those with advanced age-related cosmetic concerns.
Typically Bellafill® is injected two to three times over the course of eight weeks to avoid under-or over-correcting. Additional treatments are at the patient’s discretion.
